If you grew up in South Africa, there’s a good chance you know these Crunchies by heart. They’re the kind of bake that didn’t need a recipe card because everyone’s mom, aunt, or gran just knew how to make them. You’d find them on enamel plates at church teas, wrapped in foil for school fundraisers, or lined up on kitchen counters next to a kettle that was always boiling, ready to make a strong cup of tea. They were simple, sturdy, and comforting — the kind of treat that felt like home.

These days, I’m making them in my own kitchen, far from where I grew up, but still carrying those same memories with me. As a mother of five hungry kids, I’m constantly feeding a crowd — after-school snacks, late-afternoon “I’m starving” moments, and the quiet pause before dinner when everyone seems to gather in the kitchen. These Crunchies have become part of our rhythm, just like they once were in mine.

We call them Crunchies because they’re almost always on our table. Cut into generous squares, drizzled with chocolate, and disappearing faster than I can make them. Every batch feels like a small bridge between past and present — a South African classic living on in a busy, messy, love-filled home. It’s the kind of recipe that doesn’t just fill bellies, but holds stories, traditions, and the comforting reminder that some things are meant to be passed down, one bake at a time.

So, I thought I would share the recipe with you!

Ingredients

4 cups dry oats

3 cups Shredded Coconut – Unsweetened

1 cup Flour

1 1/2 Cups Sugar

1/2 tsp Salt

1 tsp Cinnamon

1 cup Salted Butter

3 Tsp Honey or Golden Syrup

1/4 Cup Milk (Full Fat)

2 tsp Baking Soda

200g Milk Chocolate

Non-Stick Baking Spray

Method

Preheat oven to 325’F / 160’C

Spray Baking Pan (9 inches by 14 inches)

Mix all the dry ingredients together except the Baking Soda

Combine the syrup/honey with the butter and melt. Allow cooling. (5 minutes)

Stir Baking Soda into the milk until it dissolves.

Add the cooled butter to the milk. Combine with the dry ingredients.

This is where it gets fun, get your hands dirty and mix all the ingredients together.

Spoon into the Baking Pan, flatten and cover with foil.

My suggestion is to bake for 15 minutes with the foil, uncover and bake for a further 15 minutes until golden brown. For a chewy Christmas Crunchie bake for 30 minutes. For a crunchier Crunchie bake for 35/40 min. Just keep an eye on it.

Remove from the oven and, using a sharp-tipped knife, cut your squares.

Melt the chocolate.

Drizzle over. Allow to cool.
