Beyond the excitement of its festivals, Mt. Dora’s timeless charm provides experiences you won’t find elsewhere. Imagine waking up to a gentle mist hovering over the lake at dawn, where kids can chase ducks along its scenic lakefront, or enjoying the soft strum of guitar notes wafting through the air downtown. If you’re planning a Florida family vacation or looking for memorable outdoor travel tips, Mt. Dora combines a small-town feel with big experiences, making it a top choice.

Sights to See in Mt. Dora

1. Downtown Mt. Dora

The heartbeat of the town lies in its downtown district. Picture brick streets, boutiques filled with handmade treasures, and coffee shops that smell like happiness. You’ll find antique stores tucked between art galleries and small bookshops that make you want to linger.
One highlight is Renningers, where vintage lovers can browse through mid-century furniture and quirky collectables. Families will love Papilio, a shop filled with plants, décor, and creative gifts that spark curiosity in both kids and adults.

2. Lake Dora & Lighthouse

No trip is complete without a stroll along the waterfront. The Mt. Dora Lighthouse, which packs a hefty dose of charm, reflects the golden hues of the setting sun. It’s Florida’s only inland freshwater lighthouse, casting a warm glow that dances on the water’s surface. As you breathe in the crisp lake air, with its hint of freshwater mingling with the scent of nearby pine trees, pack a picnic blanket, grab some snacks from a local deli, and watch boats drift across the lake.

3. Modernism Museum

Art lovers, this is your stop. The Modernism Museum houses an impressive collection of modern art, design, and furniture. It’s a fun way to spark conversations with teens or to inspire younger kids to think creatively.

4. Mt. Dora Centre for the Arts

From rotating exhibits to classes, this spot celebrates local creativity. Even if you don’t step inside, the murals around town bring colour to every corner.

Trails and Outdoor Adventures in Mt Dora

If your crew loves the outdoors, Mt. Dora doesn’t disappoint. It boasts beautiful walking routes that can even be done by bike. This town is surrounded by trails that make it easy to blend exercise with exploration.

Leisurely Stroll: Lake Dora Trail

A gentle, scenic walk perfect for families. It winds along the waterfront, offering glimpses of sailboats, herons, and sometimes even playful otters. If you’re pushing a stroller, this is your go-to.

Wildlife Spot:. Palm Island Park Boardwalk

This is hands-down one of Mt. Dora’s treasures. The boardwalk takes you right into nature, with winding paths through wetlands and shaded tree canopies. Kids will love spotting turtles basking in the sun on logs, while birdwatchers will want to keep their binoculars handy.
Playground Break: Gilbert Park
Think playground plus lake views. Parents can sip coffee on benches while kids burn energy on swings and slides. It’s also a great starting point for walking to other parts of town. Our kids had the best time working off all their energy here!
Nature Escape: Trimble Park
Just a short drive away, Trimble Park offers picnic areas, a nature trail loop, and campsites shaded by massive live oaks. This is where you breathe a little deeper and let the kids run wild.

Dining in Mt. Dora: Where to Eat

Foodies will love Mt. Dora’s restaurant scene, which is as lively as its art festivals. From casual bites to gourmet dinners, these are some of my favourite spots in town.

1. The Goblin Market

This cosy, book-lined restaurant feels like you’re dining inside a hidden library. Known for its creative American dishes with an international flair, it’s perfect for a date night or a special occasion. Don’t miss the lamb chops or the decadent bread pudding.

2. Pisces Rising

Perched above Lake Dora, this restaurant is all about fresh seafood and sunset views. Their blackened mahi mahi tacos and signature cocktails are crowd-pleasers. Pro tip: Arrive early for a seat on the patio.

3. 1921 Mt. Dora

A modern fine-dining experience that celebrates Florida’s seasonal ingredients. The menu changes frequently, but expect dishes such as roasted quail, creative salads, and artisanal desserts.

4. Wave Asian Bistro

When you’re craving sushi with a twist, Wave delivers. Their sushi tacos and inventive rolls make dining fun for adventurous eaters.

5. Copacabana Cuban Café

Family-friendly, colorful, and packed with flavor—this is where you go for authentic Cuban sandwiches and plantains. The kids will love the empanadas, and parents will appreciate the strong coffee.
Mt. Dora isn’t called the Festival City for nothing. As the seasons change, the town’s vibrant spirit comes alive with events that embrace each time of year. From the hue-filled canvases at the Mt. Dora Arts Festival in February, where over 300 artists display their masterpieces, to the lively Spring and Fall Craft Fairs, with handmade jewellery, candles, and more adorning the streets, there’s always something to capture your interest. November invites plant enthusiasts to the Plant & Garden Fair, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the local flora. When winter arrives, the streets twinkle with over 2 million lights during the Christmas Lights Festival in December, enveloping the town in a festive glow. Throughout the year, Mt. Dora offers a diverse array of experiences that make it a magical place to visit, no matter when you choose to go.

Where to Stay in Mt. Dora

Whether you’re looking for a romantic B&B or a family-friendly inn, the town has plenty of options.
  • Lakeside Inn: Florida’s most historic hotel, dating back to 1883. Think rocking chairs, lake views, and Southern charm.
  • Heron Cay Lakeview Bed & Breakfast: A colourful, Victorian-style inn that feels like stepping into a storybook.
  • Airbnb Options: Quaint cottages and lakeside homes make it easy for families to spread out.
We stayed in a charming holiday rental called  Lake Dorable,  featuring a lovely deck perfect for afternoon cocktails and stunning sunset views. Its location near shops and restaurants made our walks enjoyable.

Tips for Families Visiting Mt. Dora

Travelling with kids means thinking ahead. Here are some friendly tips to make your visit smoother:
  • We always plan for downtime. Between the boardwalk, parks, and downtown shops, kids may become overstimulated, so be sure to build in breaks at the playgrounds.
  • Don’t forget to bring snacks. While restaurants are plentiful, having easy snacks helps keep meltdowns at bay.
  • The brick streets are stroller-friendly, though a lightweight stroller is easier to navigate.
  • Capture the sunsets. Lake Dora sunsets are unforgettable, so make sure to take family photos.
