The kids and I visited the Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg, and we loved it! The entire experience from beginning to end was a wonderful treat. We arrived early, just before the park opened at 9 AM, which allowed us to enjoy the park with fewer people for a few hours. It was also much cooler than being out in the midday sun.
Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg
The Montecasino Bird Park is home to over 60 species of birds, as well as some reptiles and mammals. Our favorite part was the walk-in aviary, where we encountered not only some stunning birds but also a variety of snakes and other creatures. There were also two adorable lemurs that loved to follow us around. However, I wouldn’t recommend petting them, as there is a sign indicating they may nip.
After exploring the Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg, we settled down for the bird show. The host was engaging, asking the children various questions and teaching them about birds of prey. Following our stroll through the gardens and the bird show, we went to the Flamingo Cafe, which is located within the bird park, right next to the flamingo garden. The cafe offers affordable meals and snacks, which I, as a mom of five, truly appreciate. I often find that outings like these can get quite expensive, but at R35 to R40 per meal, I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend the chicken strips and chips!
Things To Consider Before Going To The Montecasino Bird Park
I would suggest taking a water bottle, some sunscreen, and possibly a cap, especially if you are going in the Summer. It can get quite hot. As well as some comfy walking shoes.
If you are a fan of birds or would like to experience a lovely morning out, you should have a visit!
