The kids and I went to visit the Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg and, we loved it! The entire experience from start to finish was an absolute treat. We decided to arrive early, just before the park opened at 9 am. It was lovely to have the bird park to ourselves for a few hours and a lot cooler than walking around in the mid-day sun.
About The Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg
The Montecasino Bird Park boasts over 60 species of birds, with some reptiles and mammals. Our favorite part was the walk-in aviary, where you will find not only the most exquisite birds but also a host of snakes and other creatures. But, also these two adorable Lemurs that love to follow you around. I wouldn’t pet them though there is a sign that says they like to nip.
Once we had explored the Montecasino Bird Park in Johannesburg, we got seated for the bird show. The host was very engaging, asking the children many questions and educating them on the birds of prey. Shortly after our meander through the gardens and the bird show, we headed over to the Flamingo Cafe. The cafe is within the bird park and just next to the flamingo bird garden. The restaurant offers affordable meals and snacks which, this mom of 5 appreciates. I often find that these excursions can become quite expensive, but at R35 / R40 a meal, I was impressed. I recommend the chicken strips and chips!
Things To Consider Before Going To The Montecasino Bird Park
I would suggest taking a water bottle, some sunscreen, and possibly a cap, especially if you are going in Summer. It can get quite hot. As well as some comfy walking shoes, and don’t forget your masks and hand sanitizer :)
If you are a fan of birds, or would just like to experience a lovely morning out, you should definitely go and visit!
