For God So Loved The World – A children’s lesson based on John 3;16

Bible Verse: John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (KJV)

Object Lesson – God’s love is everywhere

Place a globe of the world on a table in front of you. Give it a spin. Hold up a large red cut-out heart. Help children understand what God’s love looks like when it is given freely and shared with others.

Say:

John 3:16 teaches us one of the most important truths in the Bible — God loves us so much that He gave His Son, Jesus. God didn’t keep His love to Himself. He shared it with the whole world.

Love isn’t just something we say — love is something we DO.

Lesson Theme – Love

This verse shows us that love gives. God saw the world needed help, forgiveness, and hope, and because of His great love, He sent Jesus to rescue us.

God’s love is:

  • Big

  • Selfless – Explain what selfless means, and give examples.

  • For everyone

Figurative Theme – Open Arms

Let’s use our bodies to help us understand love.

Have the children stand up.

Ask:
“What do our arms do?”
(Answers may include: hug, carry, hold, help, protect.)

Now ask the children to fold their arms tightly across their chest.

When our arms are closed, we can’t hug anyone. We can’t help very much. We’re keeping everything to ourselves.

Now ask them to open their arms wide.

When our arms are open, we are ready to:

  • Love others

  • Welcome people in

  • Help those who need us

Just like God opened His arms to the world by giving us Jesus, we can open our arms and hearts to others.

Life Challenge / Discussion

God’s love is meant to be shared.

Ask the children:

  • Who can you show love to this week?

  • What does love look like at home?

  • How can you show love at school or church, or in your community?

    • Helping a sibling

    • Saying kind words

    • Sharing toys

    • Praying for someone

    • Giving a smile

Challenge the children to think of one person each day they can show God’s love to through words or actions.

Love in Action Activity

  • Give each child a picture of the world to colour, along with the image of Jesus.

Children can colour their activity and take it home as a reminder to live with open arms and loving hearts.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank you for loving us so much that you gave everything for us.
Thank you for showing us what true love looks like.
Help us to open our hearts and arms to others, just like you do.
Teach us to love the way you love — kindly, bravely, and freely.

In Your precious name we pray.
Amen.
