January always arrives with a whisper (or a shout): “New year, new you!” Social media explodes with colour-coded planners, bold resolutions, and promises that this year, we’ll finally get it all together. If you’re anything like me—a mama juggling kids, laundry, dreams, faith, and that half-cold cup of coffee—you know the pressure can be overwhelming. But what if this year, you skipped the pressure and found a New Year reset that fits real life? A reset for moms who want less perfection, more intention, and small healthy habits that actually stick. Here is an interesting article by Forbes on Why New Year’s Resolutions Fail.
Why Traditional New Year Resolutions Fail
Let’s be honest: most New Year’s resolutions are built for a version of us that doesn’t exist. The one who never misses a workout, never loses her temper, and always has matching underwear on. (No offence to anyone who actually has their life together like this, it’s just not me) But here’s the truth: motherhood is messy, unpredictable, and beautifully real. Instead of chasing impossible standards, what if we designed a reset to serve the life we’re actually living?
This year, I’m embracing a framework that meets me right where I am. It’s about rhythms, not rigid routines. It’s about micro-resolutions and habit stacking—tiny changes that fit into the chaos, not on top of it. Ready to reset the Messy Mama way?
My New Year Reset Framework
1. Habit Stacking
Forget adding more to your to-do list. Instead, piggyback a new, tiny habit onto something you’re already doing:
- Pray while folding laundry.
- Stretch while your coffee brews.
Read while your kids have quiet time. Erm… squash the quiet time, never happens in my house. Switch off the TV, stop the scrolling, and read before bed!
2. Micro-Resolutions
We’re saying goodbye to “all or nothing” thinking. A new year reset means that five minutes count. Consistency beats intensity. Progress—no matter how messy—always wins over perfection. It’s about celebrating what you can do, not shaming yourself for what you can’t.
Here are my 10 Intentions for 2026
1. Care for My Body Gently
No more punishing workouts or extreme diets. I am so over the role society plays in making mothers feel “unpretty”. Yes, I just made that word up. Instead, I’m choosing gentle care: drinking water before coffee, and moving my body for 30 minutes a day. Most days, I stretch while the kettle boils or during morning conversations with the kids. It’s not about doing it all; it’s about doing something. And in this 45th year of my life, I am ageing gracefully!
2. Feed My Mind With Truth
Scrolling rarely fills me up, but truth does. My micro-resolution? Read one page of something nourishing each day—faith, encouragement, or personal growth. I habit-stack this by reading either after my morning coffee (or during) or before bed.
3. Create Rhythms, Not Rigid Routines
Motherhood rarely follows a strict schedule, so I anchor my day with just three priorities instead of a daunting to-do list. I set these priorities while sipping my first cup of coffee. Some days, it’s laundry, figuring out what’s on the schedule, and answering emails. Other days, it’s simply surviving.
4. Be Present With My Family
Some of the best moments happen when I put my phone down, look my kids in the eyes, and really listen. My intention: one undistracted, intentional moment every day—during meals, bedtime prayers, or chores.
5. Speak Kinder to Myself
I should have put this down as #1! I hear my own voice more than anyone else’s, so I’m working to replace one negative thought a day with something true and kind. And, no, I don’t stand in front of the mirror reciting “I am’s” to myself. Simply no time for that. Just a simple daily reminder to kick the negative thoughts out of my head!
6. Do something I love
I am sure we have heard the same saying a million times. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Yet, we STILL DO! All the time. I am the first to admit that I find it incredibly hard to do something for myself. I am so quick to rather do something for the kids. This year, whatever it may be, I will prioritise being more intentional about doing the things I love.
7. Simplify My Home, One Small Space at a Time
My poor family, I have already started this. Forget the giant purge. I am focusing on decluttering one drawer, shelf, or basket each week—usually while waiting for dinner to cook. It’s small, but over time, it adds up.
8. Protect My Energy
You don’t have to do everything to be enough. Once a month, I will say no to one thing that drains me. I will pause before responding to requests—no instant yeses will come from me this year!
9. Choose Progress Over Perfection
Messy progress still moves you forward. My reset goal: finish things imperfectly rather than abandon them. When I feel stuck, I remind myself: done is better than perfect.
10. Invite God Into the Ordinary
Faith isn’t just for quiet mornings; it’s for messy ones too. I will try to aim for one prayer a day—spoken, whispered, or silent—while driving, washing dishes, or tucking kids in.
You Don’t Need a New You—You Need Support
The world says you need to reinvent yourself every January. But you don’t need a new you; you need support, grace, and reminders of what matters most. It’s about aligning your life to your values, one small, faithful step at a time. If you’re longing for a New Year reset that’s gentle, doable, and real—welcome. Let’s make 2026 the year we stop chasing perfect and start embracing progress, together.
