The first stop on our 4400km roadtrip through South Africa was Hythelands House in Mooi River – Kwazulu Natal. Hythelands House is situated on a working dairy farm, which made for a wonderful learning experience for our kids. Despite its “working” status, it has the most tranquil surroundings and exquisite views of the Drakensburg Mountains.

Hythelands House – Mooi River

It was truly breathtaking and allowed us to unwind immediately from the hustle of living in the city. Hythelands House – Mooi River is a self-catering, 8 sleeper house with farm style decor, leather furniture and incredibly comfortable beds… Yes, this mom of 5 most definitely noticed that! I slept like a rock.

What I truly loved about Hythelands House, was, that it felt as if you were in the middle of nowhere. Yet, down the road, you find yourself in the historic Midlands Meander. Which is a little country route dotted with tiny towns that host a variety of art studios, restaurants of many different cuisines and outdoor experiences such as fly fishing, horse riding, bike riding, zip-lining and some of the most scenic hikes you’ll ever find.

When we arrived at Hythelands House the owner took some time out of his heavy farm workload and came to greet us personally, giving us a brief run down of what is available in the area should we want to explore it more. We were also given some fresh milk to enjoy with our morning coffee. It was absolutely delicious.

Hythelands House was definitely one of our highlights. Not just because of it’s gorgeous surroundings, picturesque views and easy access to quaint shops, but also the warm hospitality of our hosts and the generous comforts of the accommodation itself. It was a much needed respite for us as a family, and the perfect way to start our two week long road-trip.

Travel tip:

If you find yourself staying at Hythelands House (which I highly recommend) – make sure you pack all the food you’ll need for your stay, even though shops are close by, you don’t want to leave the farm for something as mundane as buying groceries – what a waste of time that would be… and you don’t want to find yourself without any essentials.
